General Requirements to Teach Abroad

Do I need to speak advanced English to apply?
Many schools look for candidates with intermediate to advanced English. Improving your English will increase your chances of getting hired, but you can still apply to open job positions while you're learning.
What is Credential Evaluation and why do I need it?
Credential Evaluation is an official review of your studies and certifications to match U.S. standards. You don’t need it right away to apply to the job openings, but you will need it later if you move forward in the hiring process. If you choose to start your Credential Evaluation process early, it can save time later and show schools you're prepared.
Do I need a teaching certificate to work in the USA?
Not always. It depends on the type of school and its specific requirements. However, you will need to provide proof of your professional credentials and expertise, and depending on your visa (such as a J-1), a teaching certificate or additional documentation may be required. If you need guidance or assistance, our team is here to help maximize your employment opportunities.
What type of visa do I need?
It depends on the school. Many openings are available for J-1, H-1B or H1-B1 visas. You’ll get all this information in detail during the screening/recruitment process.
What visa options are available to hire international teachers in the U.S.?
The most common visa options for international teachers are the J-1 Exchange Visitor visa, the H-1B specialty occupation visa, the H-1B1 visa (for Chile and Singapore), and the cap-exempt H-1B for qualifying institutions. Each has different requirements, costs, and benefits.
What is the J-1 visa for teachers?
The J-1 visa is a cultural exchange visa that allows qualified international teachers to work in U.S. K–12 schools for up to 5 years. It's designed to promote mutual understanding between countries through education. Teachers must be sponsored by an official J-1 program and meet certain qualifications. Please note this visa doesn't lead directly to permanent residency.
Who is the J-1 Teacher Visa for?
The visa is intended for:

-Non-U.S. citizens who are currently living and working outside the U.S.
-Licensed, full-time educators with at least two years of teaching experience
-Teachers who have a degree equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's or higher
-Educators with proficient English (may be assessed via standardized tests or interviews)
-Individuals committed to cultural exchange, not permanent immigration
What is the H-1B1 visa?
The H-1B1 visa is a U.S. work visa for citizens of Chile and Singapore under Free Trade Agreements. It’s not subject to the H-1B lottery and is easier and faster to process. It allows teachers to work in specialized roles in the U.S. for 18 months, renewable indefinitely.
Can a teacher have more than one visa option?
Yes. Some teachers may qualify for both J-1 and H-1B (or H-1B1). The decision depends on their goals, timeline, and the employer’s capacity to sponsor.
Can a J-1 teacher work at multiple schools?
No. J-1 teachers are placed through their designated program sponsor, and must work only at the assigned host school listed in their DS-2019 form, unless formally transferred through the sponsor.
